Twenty-Three Years in the Atlas

Not a retailer.
A network.

I'm an Englishman who came to Marrakech in 2002 for reasons I couldn't fully explain at the time — the colour, the chaos, the warmth of it, the way a city can feel ancient and alive at the same time. I never really left.

Over 23 years I've built real relationships with weaving families across the Atlas — not supplier relationships, actual friendships. I speak enough Darija to be dangerous, I know whose mother taught whom to weave, and I know what a rug should feel like before it's even unrolled.

Being English here has its advantages. I love Morocco deeply — and I also understand how the wider world buys, what Western homes look like, what quality means to someone that is going to live with a rug for thirty years. That gap between craft and customer is exactly what I bridge. The weaving family gets paid directly and fairly — no agents, no wholesalers taking a cut. I take a margin, but it's honest work for an honest service, and it's far less than any retailer would charge.

Third rug from The Atlas Knot now. The quality is consistent and the prices are genuinely unbeatable for handwoven Berber rugs. James really knows his craft.

★★★★★
The kilim runner in our hallway gets more compliments than anything else in the house. It arrived with an authenticity card and a note about the weaver. Beautiful touch.

“James comes to us — not to a market, not to a middleman. He sits with the families and he knows what a rug should feel like.”

The Communities Behind the Rugs

The hands behind
every knot.

Fatima Ait Benhaddou
Azilal Valley
Fatima has been weaving since she was eight years old — taught by her mother, who was taught by hers. Her rugs carry the geometric language of the Ait Benhaddou lineage: bold diamonds, controlled asymmetries, a palette drawn from the ochre cliffs and juniper shadows of the valley.
Khadija Oussaid
Imilchil Region
Khadija weaves what the mountains look like in winter — white fields, grey ridgelines, occasional flashes of indigo. Her Beni Ourain work is some of the most restrained and sophisticated we carry. She commissions on request and keeps a waiting list for her one-of-a-kind pieces.
Zhor Azemmouri
Midelt Region
Zhor runs a cooperative of twelve women in the Midelt valley. She controls quality at every stage — from raw fleece washing to the final pile trimming. Her rugs are the most consistent we carry, and her cooperative model means every weaver is paid fairly and immediately.
